Haunted Portland
It's not always Haunted House Decorations and Halloween Props here at The Horror Dome - sometimes we like to delve into the real deal. Portland holds itself to a higher standard of strange with hits official slogan “Keep Portland Weird”, so it should come as no surprise that they have a legacy of haunted locations and paranormal experiences that they’re proud to share with visitors. You learn a lot about the city’s dark past as you delve into this area, and the tour guides you may encounter as part of your visit will fill you with every spooky detail. If you’re in the area try these haunted stops.
Shanghai Ghost Tour
Shanghai, in this case, doesn’t mean the Oriental city, but instead refers to the practice of capturing men and women and selling them into slavery. Portland used to be a hub for this activity with its men being snagged from bars and moved through the city in underground tunnels. These tunnels also contained an entire elicit market, including opium dens, boxing rings, and jail cells, and of course the Captains looking to purchase these captured people.
Hawthorne Ghost Tour
There’s an old stretch of Portland known as “Asylum Street”, which should tell you everything you need to know about the goings on there. Throughout their tour you’ll be lead to an asylum that looks like its straight out of a horror prop kit. Throughout the tour you won’t encounter any zombie bodies or Halloween Animatronics, but you’ll get a chance to talk to the ghosts using spirit sticks and even stop by the Bagdad, the most haunted location in Portland.
Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery
Moving away from tours let’s talk about some of the locations you can visit on your own. One of these includes a graveyard with over 25,000 inhabitants, all of them unmarked, so there’s no way of knowing who the spirits that are frequently seen wandering through the marble orchard. Found inside is an imposing stone tower with rich stained glass windows that just adds to the dark gothic feel of the place.
Old Town Pizza
Dinner and a scare? You can find it here in Old Town Pizza, a local parlor that is housed inside an old hotel. 100 years after her death a resident of the hotel known as Nina is still seen wandering the basement and lobby. The story goes that she died after being thrown into the buildings elevator shaft, and her presence makes this location one of Portland’s most haunted places.
Portland is a beautiful city in the Pacific Northwest, but like its sister city Seattle it’s location led to it being a lawless place full of some of the worst and best of humankind in its early years. This atmosphere helped to create a city full of history and tragedy to match hand in hand with its love of absolute weirdness. There are many other places within the city with a reputation for being haunted, so be sure to ask around for spots known only to the locals.
